The idea of dropping everything and moving to Costa Rica Relocation seems easy. You happily quit your job. You tell everyone you know the great news. You’re so excited you can’t sleep. What I did is clear a room in the house and then fill it with what I considered “must-haves.” Unfortunately, I then had to reconsider and remove half of those items. I was reminded Costa Rica is about a simpler life, not a lot of stuff. You don’t want your new life to be consumed with maintaining a bunch of stuff when it should be about adventures, new friends and new experiences. When letting items go, remember to focus on the peace and simplicity you will have in Costa Rica.

Keep in mind that anything newer than 6 months old will be taxed as if brand new. Even though sometimes we can get them in as used if you put them in different boxes. It can take a couple of months for shipped items to arrive so bring what you absolutely need in your luggage. Don’t pack or ship anything illegal, dangerous or intended for sale.

A few types of items, like clothes, shoes, and furniture are taxes as personal use items, the lowest rate. Other items are charged as if brand new, based on the cost of the items in original condition as well as insurance and freight costs you pay. Cars are taxed higher than anything else, based on Costa Rican Blue Book values. (The Hacienda Valor)

The cheapest and easiest way to get your things to Costa Rica is by shipping to Limon (if coming from the east coast) or Puntarenas (if coming from the Pacific). Miami is the closest port in the USA. 40-ft cargo containers are often used to ship items from Miami to Costa Rica.
